60 Minutes Reports on “The Promise”, “Aussiewood” & “Bhutan” November 17 2024

This Sunday, November 17, 2024, “60 Minutes” extends its usual runtime to 90 minutes, starting at 7:30 PM ET on CBS, right after the football game. This special edition features three compelling stories, each exploring unique global and societal issues.

The Promise

Twenty-three years after the tragic World Trade Center attacks on September 11, the pain and uncertainty linger for over a thousand families still awaiting news about their lost loved ones. In a poignant segment, correspondent Scott Pelley explores the relentless efforts by the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner to identify remains using cutting-edge DNA technology and new research techniques. This double-length segment delves into the promise made to these families and the ongoing mission to bring them some form of closure. Nicole Young leads the production of this touching exploration.

Aussiewood

The phenomenon of Australians dominating the American film industry, both in front of and behind the camera, is explored by correspondent Jon Wertheim. This segment features interviews with prominent Aussie actress Sarah Snook and renowned filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, who discuss the superior training grounds of Australia’s dramatic arts scene and their personal journeys to international stardom. The segment also looks at the Australian perspective on achieving and handling fame. Jacqueline Williams produces this insightful look into the cultural export of Australian talent to Hollywood.

Bhutan

Correspondent Lesley Stahl takes viewers to the remote Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan, known for prioritizing Gross National Happiness over Gross National Product. Facing a demographic and economic crisis with 9% of its population seeking better opportunities abroad, Bhutan’s government embarks on an ambitious plan to reverse this brain drain. The development of a new “mindfulness” city aims to draw young citizens back and rejuvenate the Bhutanese economy. This segment, also a double-length feature, is produced by Shari Finkelstein and presents an in-depth look at Bhutan’s innovative approach to national well-being and economic challenges.

Tune in to CBS this Sunday for this extended 90-minute special of “60 Minutes,” which promises to deliver impactful storytelling and in-depth analysis on issues of enduring relevance and newsworthy importance.
