This Sunday, October 20, 60 Minutes will air a special 90-minute edition from 7:00 to 8:30 PM ET/PT on CBS and streaming on Paramount+. The episode features a series of compelling reports that promise to shed light on significant issues and stories.
Relief, N.C.
In the wake of Hurricane Helene, correspondent Sharyn Alfonsi visits Relief, North Carolina, one of the regions most devastated by the category four storm. More than three weeks have passed since the hurricane tore through six states, leaving destruction in its wake. The segment will focus on the ongoing challenges faced by the residents of this rural area in the Appalachian Mountains, including the lack of basic utilities like water and electricity, severed communications, and the arduous process of rebuilding without insurance. Producer Ashley Velie captures the resilience of a community determined to recover from the catastrophe.
Navalny
Months after the death of anti-Putin activist Alexei Navalny in a Russian prison, his wife, Yulia Navalnaya, emerges as a pivotal figure in his political movement. In her first U.S. interview, she sits down with correspondent Lesley Stahl to discuss Navalny’s posthumous memoir—an act of defiance penned in the harsh conditions of a high-security prison. The memoir, smuggled out under perilous circumstances, recounts the activist’s final years and his reasons for returning to Russia despite previous attempts on his life. Yulia Navalnaya’s campaign for justice and her late husband’s legacy are at the forefront of this powerful segment. Richard Bonin leads the production of this revealing interview.
The Swingiest County
Correspondent Jon Wertheim heads to Door County, Wisconsin, a swing county with a unique political footprint: its residents have consistently voted for the winning presidential candidate in every election of the 21st century. Wertheim explores this politically unpredictable region, engaging with locals to uncover the factors influencing their voting patterns and searching for the elusive mystery voter who has successfully swung from Republican to Democrat and back in each election since 2000. Draggan Mihailovich produces this exploration into the heart of America’s political landscape.
The Cap Arcona
Bill Whitaker reports on one of the forgotten calamities of World War II—the bombing of the Cap Arcona. This segment, reported from Germany’s Baltic Coast, delves into the history of the Cap Arcona, a luxury ocean liner turned Nazi floating concentration camp, where thousands of prisoners met their tragic end in an aerial attack. Through interviews with historians and Holocaust survivors, Whitaker brings attention to this neglected chapter of history, reminding viewers of the enduring impacts of wartime decisions. Marc Lieberman produces this poignant historical retrospective.
This extended edition of “60 Minutes” promises to provide audiences with an in-depth look at significant, diverse stories that resonate with contemporary relevance and historical importance.
