60 Minutes Reports on “Secretary of Commerce”, “On British Soil” & “St. Mary’s” on September 1 2024

This Sunday, “60 Minutes” returns with a compelling lineup of segments that delve into pivotal moments and influential figures in commerce, history, and education. Set to air from 7:00-8:00 PM ET/PT on CBS, this special post-season edition revisits previously broadcast segments, now updated with fresh insights and new developments.

Secretary of Commerce

In the first segment, viewers will revisit U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo’s significant impact since her appointment under President Joe Biden’s administration. Correspondent Lesley Stahl meets Raimondo both in Washington, D.C., and Rhode Island, her home state where she formerly served as governor. The discussion centers on the intensifying “chip war” ignited by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent trade tensions with China over restrictions on semiconductor sales. This segment offers a rare glimpse into Raimondo’s journey to leading a department that has become a pivotal center for national security, manufacturing, and job creation.

On British Soil

The second segment transports viewers to the Channel Islands, located just off the coast of Britain. These islands, while known for their picturesque landscapes, harbor a dark and controversial history. “60 Minutes” contributor Holly Williams explores the islands’ past, including their five-year occupation by Nazi Germany during World War II and the operation of two concentration camps. Through conversations with historians, British government officials, and residents, this piece aims to uncover and understand the complex legacy of these British Crown dependencies.

St. Mary’s

The final segment features an inspiring story from New Orleans, where two high school seniors at St. Mary’s Academy achieved what was thought impossible: solving a 2,000-year-old mathematical puzzle. Correspondent Bill Whitaker speaks to the students, their families, and their teachers about this extraordinary accomplishment. St. Mary’s Academy, a school dedicated to the empowerment of its African American female students, highlights the profound potential and intelligence of its student body.
